Press Release

The UN Commission on Human Rights in South Sudan has undertaken a visit to Nairobi, Kenya, in December 2024, aiming to address the persistent human rights violations in South Sudan.

This visit comes at a critical time, as reports of deteriorating humanitarian conditions and severe abuses against the population in South Sudan continue to grow.

During the visit, the Commission held meetings with Kenyan government officials, representatives of civil society organizations, and South Sudanese refugees living in Kenya. The discussions focused on strengthening human rights protections, ensuring accountability for violations, and supporting efforts to promote peace and reconciliation in South Sudan.

The Commission emphasized the crucial role of neighboring countries, including Kenya, in fostering stability in South Sudan. It also called for international cooperation to address ongoing challenges, particularly regarding the safe return and rights of refugees.

These efforts align with the Commission’s broader mission to seek sustainable solutions to the crisis in South Sudan and urge all stakeholders to adhere to the principles of human rights and international humanitarian law.
