Side Event at the Human Rights Council to Discuss Civic Space and Freedom of Association in Tunisia

Committee for Justice (CFJ), in partnership with the Tunisian League for Human Rights (LTDH), the Tunisian Association of Democratic Women (ATFD), the World Organisation Against Torture (OMCT), Avocats Sans Frontières (ASF), Heinrich Böll Stiftung (HBS), and the International Commission of Jurists (ICJ), is organizing a side event entitled:
“Freedom of Association and Civic Space in Tunisia: Current Challenges, International Responses, and Complementarity between African and UN Human Rights Mechanisms”
The event will take place on 23 June 2026 on the margins of the 62nd Session of the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva.

The discussion aims to provide a platform for dialogue between Tunisian civil society organizations, African and UN human rights mechanisms, diplomatic missions, and international experts regarding recent developments affecting civic space and freedom of association in Tunisia.

The event will feature the participation of Ms. Salma Sassi, Commissioner of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights and Country Rapporteur for Tunisia, and Mr. Damilola Olawuyi, Chair of the United Nations Working Group on Business and Human Rights, alongside representatives of Tunisian civil society organizations.

The event will also include a recorded video intervention by Ms. Gina Romero, United Nations Special Rapporteur on the rights to freedom of peaceful assembly and of association.

Participants will discuss recent developments affecting civil society organizations in Tunisia, the importance of preserving civic space and freedom of association, and the role of international and regional human rights mechanisms in supporting civil society actors and protecting fundamental freedoms.

The event is organized within the framework of the Addis Ababa Roadmap, which seeks to strengthen cooperation and complementarity between African and United Nations human rights mechanisms.
