The “Committee for Justice” (CFJ) submitted a detailed report on the human rights situation in Egypt to the NGO Forum, which was discussed and approved during the “Adaptation and Resolution Recommendations” session, held as part of the forum in Banjul, Gambia. The forum intends to present the report to the 81st Ordinary Session of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights for further discussion and approval.

In its report, CFJ highlighted the ongoing repression of civil and political freedoms in Egypt, delivering sharp criticism of the Egyptian authorities’ crackdown. The committee’s recommendations are as follows:

1- Release of political prisoners: CFJ called for the immediate and unconditional release of all political prisoners and activists who were arrested for exercising their legitimate rights to freedom of expression and assembly, including prisoners of conscience.

2- Investigation into human rights violations: CFJ emphasized the need for comprehensive and impartial investigations into allegations of torture and mistreatment of detainees in Egyptian prisons. The committee also demanded that perpetrators of these violations be held accountable and not escape punishment.

3- Lifting restrictions on civil society: CFJ urged the removal of all restrictions imposed on human rights defenders and civil society organizations, including travel bans and asset freezes. The committee stressed the importance of providing a safe environment for human rights work.

4- Improving the political and civil environment: CFJ called on Egyptian authorities to create an environment that allows all citizens to actively participate in political and civil affairs without fear of repression or persecution.

5- Monitoring human rights in Egypt: CFJ urged the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights to closely monitor the human rights situation in Egypt and engage in constructive dialogue with Egyptian authorities to ensure their adherence to regional and international commitments. It also encouraged international partners, including the United Nations and the African Union, to take firm stances on Egypt’s human rights record, calling on the international community to exert diplomatic and economic pressure on the Egyptian government to ensure compliance with international human rights standards.
