Egypt: Ongoing Strike by Workers of “Innova” Ceramics in Fayoum Amid Security Siege and Demands for Fulfillment of Their Rights

Reading Time: 2 Minutes

The “Committee for Justice” (CFJ) has documented the ongoing strike by workers of “Innova” Ceramics (formerly Pharaoh Ceramics) in Fayoum Governorate, which began on Wednesday, January 22. The strike is being held amid a heavy presence of Egyptian police forces surrounding the factory.

The workers are demanding wage increases by implementing the national minimum wage and receiving their overdue salaries from the past two months. Meanwhile, workers at the company’s “Queen” factory—affiliated with “Innova”—continue their strike, seeking an annual raise of 25% of their gross salary.

According to sources, on Saturday, ten worker representatives held a meeting at the headquarters of Fayoum Governorate with Dr. Mohamed El-Tony, the Deputy Governor, in the presence of two members of parliament, Mohsen Abu Samna and Youssef El-Shazly, as well as Ayman El-Safty, a leader in the Egyptian Social Democratic Party. During the meeting, workers presented their demands. The Deputy Governor affirmed the legitimacy of their demands and promised to communicate with the factory owners for a prompt response. However, no feedback has been received from the management as of now.

The demands, according to one worker, include payment of December salaries no later than the upcoming Tuesday, regular payment of salaries by the 5th of each month, implementation of a rotation system to address transportation issues, prevention of arbitrary transfers of workers, and annual raises not less than the previous year’s increases, which ranged from 800 to 1,500 Egyptian pounds.

CFJ rejects the security siege imposed on the company’s premises and factories. The committee calls for an end to security measures against workers, fair consideration of their financial demands, and implementation of the promises made by officials to address their grievances.
