The Committee for Justice (CFJ) has documented security and judicial measures targeting three members of the Defense Committee for Prisoners of Conscience in Egypt: lawyer Wafaa Al‑Masry, lawyer Mohamed Abu Al‑Diyar, and activist Hanan Al‑Tantawy, after they appeared before the Supreme State Security Prosecution in connection with Case No. 4502 of 2026.
According to CFJ’s documentation, the prosecution charged Wafaa Al‑Masry and Hanan Al‑Tantawy with spreading false news, before ordering their release on financial bail. Lawyer Mohamed Abu Al‑Diyar was charged with joining a group established in violation of the law, spreading false news, and using social media platforms to promote it, with a decision issued to detain him for 15 days pending investigation.
The Committee also monitored the arrest operations targeting the three individuals in separate locations, including the detention of lawyer Wafaa Al‑Masry while she was with her family, amid reports that members of her family were subjected to intimidation and that their mobile phones were confiscated during the arrest operation.
The Committee for Justice stressed that targeting lawyers and human rights defenders on the basis of their peaceful activities raises concerns regarding the freedom of human rights and civic work, and the right of human rights defenders to carry out their activities without harassment or restriction.
CFJ called for respecting fair trial standards and the legal rights of detainees, and for ending any measures aimed at restricting peaceful human rights work or targeting human rights defenders because of their legitimate activities.
