The Committee for Justice (CFJ) has documented the death of detainee Khaled Mohamed Abdullah Al‑Shafei on 21 October 2026, following a severe deterioration in his health condition.

According to available information, Al‑Shafei was transferred to Al‑Ahrar Hospital, where he passed away after his condition worsened. He had reportedly been scheduled to undergo a leg amputation procedure on 18 October 2026 at Hehia Central Hospital before being transferred to Al‑Ahrar Hospital.

Available information further indicates that Al‑Shafei had been detained at Al‑Ibrahimiya Police Station for approximately six months following his arrest, and that he had previously been detained in 2022.

The Committee for Justice emphasizes the importance of ensuring timely and adequate medical care for all detainees, particularly those suffering from serious or chronic health conditions, and stresses the need for transparency regarding deaths occurring in places of detention and the circumstances surrounding them.

With this case, the number of deaths documented by the Committee for Justice since the beginning of 2026 inside prisons and detention facilities in Egypt has risen to 56 deaths, following the documentation of 60 deaths during 2025.
