The Committee for Justice (CFJ) has documented the death of Ahmed Mohamed Ali Abu Suna, 32, inside Tanta First Police Station, after reportedly falling into a diabetic coma while in detention in connection with misdemeanor cases involving dishonored checks, according to available information.
According to statements from his family, Abu Suna suffered from diabetes and a physical disability. He had reportedly been detained for approximately one month before his health condition deteriorated inside the police station. His family alleged that requests to transfer him to a hospital or provide him with the necessary medical care were not met, and that his condition ultimately resulted in his death while in custody.
The Committee for Justice stresses the importance of ensuring that all detainees have timely access to adequate medical care and that all deaths occurring in places of detention are subject to prompt, independent, and transparent investigations, particularly where allegations of medical neglect have been raised.
With this case, the number of deaths documented by the Committee for Justice since the beginning of 2026 inside prisons and detention facilities in Egypt has risen to 54 deaths, following the documentation of 60 deaths during 2025.
