Less than 1 minute Reading Time: Minutes

The Committee for Justice (CFJ) has documented the death of political detainee Mohamed Mokhtar Shallal (58 years old) inside his place of detention at Gamasa Prison on Tuesday, 26 May 2026, following a deterioration in his health condition.

According to CFJ’s documentation, the deceased was from Al‑Rahmana village in Fareskour Center, Damietta Governorate, and had been suffering from a liver disease and a continuous decline in his health while in detention, which led to his death inside the prison.

The Committee further revealed that the late Shallal had been detained since 2017, serving a 10‑year prison sentence, with his release originally scheduled for the current year.

With this case, the number of deaths documented by the Committee for Justice since the beginning of 2026 inside prisons and detention facilities in Egypt has risen to 25 deaths, following the documentation of 60 deaths during 2025.
