Press Release
The Committee for Justice (CFJ) has monitored the death of a political detainee in the National Security premises in Sharqia, citing inhumane detention conditions and severe medical neglect as the cause.
The deceased, Mohamed Ezz El-Din, a 58-year-old civil engineer and father of five (four daughters and one son), was arrested in the early hours of Saturday, November 30, from his home in Sharqia. This was his first experience of arrest.
– Enforced disappearance and medical neglect:
Following his arrest, Ezz El-Din was subjected to enforced disappearance for 24 hours before appearing before the Hehya Prosecutor’s Office on the morning of Sunday, December 1. He was subsequently transferred to the Husseiniya Police Station, but he died during his detention at the National Security premises.
Ezz El-Din suffered from diabetes, requiring regular insulin doses. However, security authorities ignored his medical condition, detaining him for two days without providing the necessary medical care. This neglect led to the rapid deterioration of his health and ultimately his death.
– Calls for investigation and accountability:
CFJ strongly condemns the incident, describing it as further evidence of the ongoing violations within detention facilities. The committee calls for independent, transparent, and urgent investigations to identify and hold those responsible accountable, ensuring they do not escape justice. CFJ also calls for robust measures to improve the conditions of political detainees and safeguard their fundamental human rights.
– 48 Deaths in custody in 2024:
This incident brings the total number of deaths recorded by CFJ in Egyptian prisons and detention centers since the beginning of 2024 to 48. Accurate information about death cases during detention in Egypt can be obtained through the Justice Watch Archive service provided by CFJ, which contains information about more than 14,000 victims and over 30,000 violations. It also monitors violations inside more than 500 places of detention in Egypt.
