Press Release
The Committee for Justice (CFJ) has monitored the arrest of Syrian media activist Laith Faris Al-Zoubi by Egyptian security forces in Hurghada, located in the Red Sea Governorate.
According to Syrian activists, Al-Zoubi’s arrest followed his demand to raise the Syrian revolution flag (the new flag) on the Syrian Embassy building in Cairo.
This incident is part of a broader pattern of tightened arbitrary measures recently implemented by Egyptian authorities against some Syrian nationals residing in the country.
These measures include denying entry to Syrian passport holders arriving from certain countries and launching a series of arrests targeting Syrians who celebrated in Sixth of October City what they described as the “fall of Bashar Al-Assad’s regime.”
CFJ calls on Egyptian authorities to respect the fundamental rights of Syrians living in Egypt and to halt the pursuit of activists and civilians exercising their legitimate right to peaceful expression.
The committee urges adherence to international standards concerning the protection of refugees and migrants, ensuring their treatment with dignity and fairness in accordance with the international agreements Egypt is committed to.
