Press Release

The “Committee for Justice” (CFJ) has monitored that the Sidi Gaber Mansheya Prosecution Office in Alexandria started investigations on Tuesday, September 10, 2024, into the case of sexual assault and torture of the young prisoner Rabie Said Hassan Mohamed Nasr (24 years old), who is detained in connection with a criminal case at Sidi Gaber Police Station.

– Torture and threats:

CFJ reported that the prisoner was subjected to sexual assault by force, accompanied by loud screams and resistance on his part, in addition to physical torture by officers at the police station. The aim was to coerce him into collaborating as an informant. When he refused to comply, he was beaten, electrocuted, and verbally abused, resulting in a severe violation of his human rights. The police officers also threatened to fabricate new charges against him if he did not submit to their demands.

Eyewitnesses confirmed that they saw the prisoner on Thursday, September 5, being transferred to Hadra Prison in poor physical condition, handcuffed and wearing only his underwear, after all his personal belongings were confiscated.

The prisoner submitted an official complaint to the prosecution regarding the torture and abuse he endured. However, after the investigations, he faced intense pressure to withdraw his complaint. He was placed in solitary confinement as part of continued efforts to pressure and mistreat him further.

– Solidarity and calls to prevent impunity:

CFJ affirms its solidarity with the young prisoner Rabie Said Hassan Mohamed Nasr in his complaint. CFJ urges the investigative authorities to provide the necessary legal protection and to ensure that those responsible for the torture do not escape punishment and are brought to trial.

CFJ also calls on the Egyptian authorities to put an end to the systematic torture practices within detention centers and prisons, respect the Egyptian constitution and laws, as well as the international treaties and conventions to which Egypt is a signatory and is obligated to implement.
