Press Release

The “Committee for Justice” (CFJ) has monitored the restrictive actions taken against human rights lawyer and advocate Asaad Heikal by the Public Prosecution. He was summoned for questioning by the First Tanta District Prosecution over statements he made during a pleading in a case that was heard before the Tanta Criminal Court about six months ago. This move has sparked concerns about the targeting of lawyers in the course of performing their professional responsibilities.

Heikal stated on his personal Facebook page that his interrogation has been postponed to Wednesday, December 4, at the request of his fellow lawyers to allow them to prepare.

He also clarified that the investigation pertains to one of the defense points he presented during his pleading in the case, describing the situation as a dangerous development that threatens lawyers’ freedom to express their views and defend their clients without fear of accountability or harassment.

In this regard, CFJ expresses full solidarity with lawyer Asaad Heikal and condemns the arbitrary measures he has been subjected to.

CFJ calls on the Public Prosecution to respect freedom of expression and the right to defense as essential components of the justice system. The committee also urges the authorities to ensure an environment conducive to lawyers practicing their profession lawfully, peacefully, and safely, thus reinforcing the rule of law and protecting human rights.
