Press Release

The “Committee for Justice” (CFJ) has monitored continued violations against Dr. Abd El-Moneim Abo El-Fotouh, former presidential candidate and head of the Strong Egypt Party. Egypt’s State Security Prosecution has filed new charges against him, including leading a terrorist group and financing terrorism.

The prosecution ordered a 15-day detention following his release from his current case, accusing him of sending encrypted messages to Muslim Brotherhood leaders and organizing secret meetings to discuss anti-state activities from within his solitary confinement, according to his lawyer.

Dr. Abo El-Fotouh was arrested in February 2018 on charges of joining a terrorist group and spreading false news. In May 2022, the Emergency State Security Criminal Court sentenced him to 15 years of rigorous imprisonment, a final ruling not subject to appeal.

Since his arrest, his health has significantly deteriorated. He has suffered repeated heart attacks and endured harsh detention conditions. In September 2022, he wrote his will in a letter to his family, raising widespread concerns about his health

CFJ strongly condemns these arbitrary actions, describing them as part of the Egyptian regime’s “political vendetta.” The committee stresses that the new charges are “unreasonable” and implausible, given his solitary confinement. CFJ calls for an immediate end to these measures, his release, and the issuance of a medical pardon due to his critical health condition.
