The Committee for Justice (CFJ) presents an overview of its activities during the first quarter of 2026, reflecting its continued work to support victims of human rights violations and human rights defenders across North Africa and the Sahel, while advancing pathways for justice, accountability, and the fight against impunity.
Between January and March 2026, CFJ continued its efforts in monitoring, documentation, and data accessibility, documenting hundreds of violations in Egypt, Sudan, and Libya, as well as in several countries across the Maghreb and Mauritania. During this period, CFJ published more than 225 statements and news pieces in three languages and further expanded its “Justice Watch Archive” with new data on victims of detention and related violations.
CFJ also maintained a strong focus on the right to a fair trial by monitoring hundreds of court hearings in Egypt, while strengthening the capacities of human rights actors through the launch of two specialized training programmes on documentation and fact-finding missions.
At the level of international advocacy, Sudan remained a central priority for CFJ during this quarter. The organization conducted training sessions for activists, contributed to the establishment of the “Sudanese Working Group” coalition comprising 17 organizations, and submitted complaints and contributions to several United Nations mechanisms regarding serious violations linked to the armed conflict. CFJ also held direct meetings with UN experts and officials from the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights.
In Egypt, CFJ continued its engagement with UN mechanisms by submitting complaints and contributions addressing arbitrary detention, enforced disappearance, torture, and gender-based violence, in addition to following up on cases before African Union mechanisms related to children’s rights.
In Libya, CFJ shed light on systematic violations and the absence of accountability, warning of the growing risk of entrenched impunity and stressing the need to activate both national and international accountability mechanisms to ensure justice for victims.
CFJ’s participation in the 61st session of the Human Rights Council marked a key milestone during the quarter, where it delivered written and oral statements on the human rights situations in Sudan, Egypt, and Libya, and held advocacy meetings in Geneva with UN mandate holders to strengthen international coordination and accountability efforts.
CFJ reaffirms that this body of work reflects its continued commitment to documenting violations, supporting victims, empowering human rights actors, and amplifying the voices of affected communities before international and regional mechanisms, with the aim of advancing justice, protecting rights, and combating impunity.
