Chad: The African Commission Condemns the Killing of 19 People in the Attack on the Presidential Palace in N’Djamena and Calls for Accountability

The African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights has expressed grave concern over the armed attack on the Presidential Palace in N’Djamena, Chad, on the night of January 8, 2025, which resulted in the deaths of 19 people.

Idrissa Sow, the Country Rapporteur on the Human Rights Situation in Chad and Chairperson of the Working Group on Death Penalty, Extrajudicial, Summary, or Arbitrary Executions, and Enforced Disappearances, welcomed the swift restoration of calm in the country. He strongly condemned the use of force against public authority and reaffirmed the Commission’s solidarity with the Government and people of Chad in the face of this attack.

He further called on Chadian judicial authorities to conduct a prompt, impartial, and thorough investigation to clarify the circumstances of the incident and identify those responsible.
