CFJ issues weekly bulletin on updates of major human rights cases for the period from January 11 to 16, 2025

As part of its continuous monitoring of the legal developments related to key human rights cases in Egypt, the Committee for Justice (CFJ) has released its weekly bulletin summarizing updates on major cases. The bulletin, published via its political case agenda, was designed to facilitate access to information on the dates of hearings and the latest developments in human rights cases in a simplified format. The updates for the period from January 11 to 16, 2025, are as follows:

  1. Case Name: “Abu El-Fotouh Case” – Broadcasting False News About the Tiran and Sanafir Agreement

  • Date: Saturday, January 11, 2025
  • Location: Court Complex at Badr Prisons Complex
  • Details: The Second Chamber of the First-Degree Criminal Court, presided over by Judge Wagdy Abdel Moneim, postponed the retrial of defendant Ahmed Yasser Ali Abdel Hafeez, Defendant No. 24 in the referral order, charged with publishing false news about the Tiran and Sanafir Agreement. The trial was adjourned to January 26, 2025, for defense arguments, with the defendant remaining in custody. The defendant had been previously sentenced to life imprisonment and placed under police supervision for five years.
    1. Case Name: The Murder of Major General Nabil Farag

  • Date: Saturday, January 11, 2025
  • Location: Court Complex at Badr Prisons Complex
  • Details: The Appeals Court, presided over by Judge Hamada El-Sawy, postponed the appeal of defendant Essam Abdel Meguid Diab Said, the second defendant in the case, to February 9, 2025, for review. The First-Degree Criminal Court, presided over by Judge Mohamed El-Saeed El-Sherbiny, had sentenced him to execution by hanging during retrial proceedings.
  1. Case Name: “The Merged Entity” – Trial of Yehia Moussa and 114 Others

  • Date: Saturday, January 11, 2025
  • Location: Court Complex at Badr Prisons Complex
  • Details: The Second Chamber of the First-Degree Criminal Court, presided over by Judge Wagdy Abdel Moneim, postponed the trial of Muslim Brotherhood leader Yehia Moussa and 114 other Brotherhood members in Case No. 383 of 2024 of the Supreme State Security Criminal Court. The trial, also registered under No. 5490 of 2024 at Qasr El-Nil Police Department, was adjourned to February 9, 2025, for witness testimony, with the detained defendants remaining in custody.
  1. Case Name: Membership in a Terrorist Group in Boulaq El-Dakrour

  • Date: Saturday, January 11, 2025
  • Location: Court Complex at Badr Prisons Complex
  • Details: The Appeals Court, presided over by Judge Hamada El-Sawy, postponed the appeal of defendant Wahib Abdel Moneim Mostafa El-Maddah, accused of joining a terrorist group in Boulaq El-Dakrour in Case No. 2293 of 2023. The trial was adjourned to February 9, 2025, for the defendant to be brought from custody. The defendant had been sentenced to three years of rigorous imprisonment and placed on the terrorist entities list.
  1. Case Name: Fire at Kafr Hakim Church in Kerdasa

  • Date: Saturday, January 11, 2025
  • Location: Court Complex at Badr Prisons Complex
  • Details: The Appeals Court, presided over by Judge Hamada El-Sawy, postponed the appeal of defendant Mahmoud Atiya El-Sayed Abu Hamd in the case known in the media as “Kafr Hakim Church Fire” in Kerdasa. The trial was adjourned to February 10, 2025, for defense arguments. The defendant had been sentenced to three years of rigorous imprisonment.
  1. Case Name: Hasm Vanguard Terrorist Group (2)

  • Date: Sunday, January 12, 2025
  • Location: Court Complex at Badr Prisons Complex
  • Details: The Second Chamber of the First-Degree Criminal Court, presided over by Judge Wagdy Abdel Moneim, postponed the trial of 111 defendants in the case of “Hasm Vanguard” and “Revolutionary Brigade,” who are accused of establishing a terrorist group, misusing social media platforms, illegally possessing firearms, and committing terrorism financing offenses. The trial was adjourned to February 11, 2025, for the submission of remaining evidence.
  1. Case Name: Guards of the Revolution

  • Date: Sunday, January 12, 2025
  • Location: Court Complex at Badr Prisons Complex
  • Details: The Appeals Court, presided over by Judge Hamada El-Sawy, postponed the appeal of six defendants charged with leading and managing a terrorist organization known in the media as “Guards of the Revolution.” The trial was adjourned to February 12, 2025, for witness testimonies.
  1. Case Name: Lebanon Square Events

  • Date: Sunday, January 12, 2025
  • Location: Court Complex at Badr Prisons Complex
  • Details: The Second Chamber of the First-Degree Criminal Court, presided over by Judge Wagdy Abdel Moneim, postponed the retrial of Islam Mohamed Ahmed, Defendant No. 2 in Case No. 22739 of 2014 of Agouza Criminal Court, known in the media as “Lebanon Square Events.” The trial was adjourned to January 26, 2025, for the defendant to be brought from custody. The defendant had been sentenced in absentia on April 7, 2016, to five years of rigorous imprisonment with the confiscation of the seized items.
  1. Case Name: Al-Omraneya Cell

  • Date: Sunday, January 12, 2025
  • Location: Court Complex at Badr Prisons Complex
  • Details: The Appeals Court, presided over by Judge Hamada El-Sawy, postponed the appeal of defendants Ahmed Badawy Ibrahim Hakim and Mohamed Khalaf Gomaa Ahmed, in the case known in the media as “Al-Omraneya Cell.” The trial was adjourned to February 11, 2025, for the defense to attend.
  1. Case Name: The Grand Media Terrorism Financing Network

  • Date: Monday, January 13, 2025
  • Location: Court Complex at Badr Prisons Complex
  • Details: The Second Chamber of the First-Degree Criminal Court, presided over by Judge Wagdy Abdel Moneim, postponed the trial of 35 defendants in the case known in the media as “The Grand Media Terrorism Financing Network.” The accused include businessmen, company owners, contractors, graphic designers, and gold shop owners. The trial was adjourned to February 8, 2025, for defense arguments.
  1. Case Name: Rabaa Sit-in Dispersal

  • Date: Monday, January 13, 2025
  • Location: Court Complex at Badr Prisons Complex
  • Details: The Appeals Court, presided over by Judge Hamada El-Sawy, postponed the appeal of defendants Khalaf Abdallah Ahmed (Defendant No. 249), Shaaban Bakry Abu Seif Mohamed (Defendant No. 362), and Hosni Saad Rashad (Defendant No. 369) in Case No. 12681 of 2013 of Giza Criminal Court, known in the media as “Rabaa Sit-in Dispersal.” The trial was adjourned to February 10, 2025, for defense arguments.
  1. Case Name: Talbeya Violence

  • Date: Monday, January 13, 2025
  • Location: Court Complex at Badr Prisons Complex
  • Details: The Appeals Court, presided over by Judge Hamada El-Sawy, accepted the appeal of Omar Abdelaziz Mohamed Abdelaziz, overturning the original judgment against him in the case known in the media as “Talbeya Violence.” The court ruled that the case had already been previously adjudicated, rendering further proceedings inadmissible.
  1. Case Name: Abdeen Violence

  • Date: Monday, January 13, 2025
  • Location: Court Complex at Badr Prisons Complex
  • Details: The Appeals Court postponed the appeal of defendants Abdo Abdel Nabi Abdelmageed Elkomy and Mohamed Ali Hasab Elneby in the case known in the media as “Abdeen Violence.” The trial was adjourned to February 8, 2025, for further review.
  1. Case Name: Al-Tagamoa Cell

  • Date: Tuesday, January 14, 2025
  • Location: Court Complex at Badr Prisons Complex
  • Details: The Second Chamber of the First-Degree Criminal Court, presided over by Judge Wagdy Abdel Moneim, postponed the trial of 73 defendants in the case known in the media as “Al-Tagamoa Cell.” The trial was adjourned to February 24, 2025, for defense arguments.
  1. Case Name: Ramses Events – Al-Fath Mosque

  • Date: Tuesday, January 14, 2025
  • Location: Court Complex at Badr Prisons Complex
  • Details: The Appeals Court, presided over by Judge Hamada El-Sawy, postponed issuing a verdict in the appeal of defendant Moussa Yehia Mohamed Abdel Fattah in Case No. 8615 of 2013 of Azbakeya Police Department and No. 4163 of 2013 of North Cairo Criminal Court, known in the media as “Al-Fath Mosque Events.” The trial was adjourned to February 11, 2025, for further deliberations.
  1. Case Name: ISIS Cell in Kerdasa

  • Date: Tuesday, January 14, 2025
  • Location: Court Complex at Badr Prisons Complex
  • Details: The Appeals Court, presided over by Judge Hamada El-Sawy, postponed the appeal of defendants Ahmed Abdel Fattah Abdallah, Youssef Ahmed Abdallah Abdel Fattah, Mostafa Galal Ahmed Abu Sena, and Osama Hamed Hussein El-Badawy in the case known in the media as “ISIS Cell in Kerdasa.” The trial was adjourned to February 8, 2025, for the verdict.
