CFJ issues weekly bulletin on updates of major human rights cases for the period from February 8 to 13, 2025 

As part of its continuous monitoring of the legal developments related to key human rights cases in Egypt, the Committee for Justice (CFJ) has released its weekly bulletin summarizing updates on major cases. The bulletin, published via its political case agenda, was designed to facilitate access to information on the dates of hearings and the latest developments in human rights cases in a simplified format. The updates for the period from February 8 to 13, 2025, are as follows:

1. Case Name: ISIS Kerdasa

• Date: Saturday, February 8, 2025
• Location: Courts Complex, Badr Prison Compound
• Details: The Appeal Court, presided over by Judge Hamada El-Sawy, issued its ruling on the appeal submitted by defendants Ahmed Abdel Fattah Abdullah, Youssef Ahmed Abdullah Abdel Fattah, Mostafa Galal Ahmed Abu Senna, and Osama Hamed Hussein Al-Badawi in the case known in the media as “ISIS Kerdasa Cell.” The court sentenced the first defendant to 15 years of rigorous imprisonment, the second and third defendants to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment, and the fourth defendant to 5 years of rigorous imprisonment.

2. Case Name: Al-Shorouk Cell

• Date: Saturday, February 8, 2025
• Location: Courts Complex, Badr Prison Compound
• Details: The Second Circuit of the Criminal Court of First Instance, presided over by Judge Wagdy Mohamed Abdel Moneim, postponed the trial of 57 defendants affiliated with the Muslim Brotherhood, accused of restructuring the Brotherhood’s Supreme Administrative Committee and its supporting committees to sustain the group’s hostile movement against state institutions. The case, known in the media as “Al-Shorouk Cell,” was adjourned to April 13, 2025, for the defense’s pleadings, with the defendants remaining in custody.

3. Case Name: Foreign Exchange Financing and Trading

• Date: Saturday, February 8, 2025
• Location: Courts Complex, Badr Prison Compound
• Details: The Second Circuit of the Criminal Court of First Instance, presided over by Judge Wagdy Mohamed Abdel Moneim, postponed the trial of Muslim Brotherhood leader Yahya Moussa and 16 others in the case of foreign exchange financing and trading to May 20, 2025, for the prosecution’s pleadings.

4. Case Name: Major Media Terrorism Financing Network

• Date: Saturday, February 8, 2025
• Location: Courts Complex, Badr Prison Compound
• Details: The Second Circuit of the Criminal Court of First Instance, presided over by Judge Wagdy Mohamed Abdel Moneim, postponed the trial of 35 defendants in the case known in the media as the “Major Media Terrorism Financing Network,” which includes businessmen, major company owners, contractors, graphic designers, and gold shop owners. The case was adjourned to April 12, 2025, for further pleadings.

5. Case Name: Al-Matariyya Violence Events

• Details: The Second Circuit of the Criminal Appeals Court, presided over by Judge Hamada El-Sawy, postponed the appeal submitted by the defendant Mohamed Magdy Mohamed Mansi in the case of assembly and violence events in Al-Matariyya to March 8, 2025, for the testimony of a prosecution witness. The defendant had been sentenced in absentia to 15 years of rigorous imprisonment.

6. Case Name: Abdeen Violence Events

7. Case Name: Joining a Terrorist Organization in Bulaq Al-Dakrour 3

9. Case Name: Suez Terrorist Cell

• Details: The Appeals Court, presided over by Judge Hamada El-Sawy, postponed the appeal filed by defendant Saad El-Desouky El-Sayed Mohamed, the 24th defendant in the case known in the media as “Suez Terrorist Cell.” He had been sentenced in absentia to the death penalty for allegedly targeting the Suez Canal. 10. Case Name: The Joker

• Date: Sunday, February 9, 2025

• Details: The Second Circuit of the Criminal Court of First Instance, presided over by Judge Wagdy Mohamed Abdel Moneim, postponed the retrial of 37 defendants in the case involving fugitive contractor Mohamed Ali, who is accused of spreading false news affecting national security and joining the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood organization. The case, registered as no. 1530 of 2020 under the Supreme State Security Prosecution, is scheduled for April 14, 2025, for the appointment of a forensic social expert to assess the status of the juvenile defendants.

11. Case Name: Smuggling Members of the Terrorist Organization Abroad

• Details: The Second Terrorism Circuit of the Supreme State Security Court, presided over by Judge Wagdy Mohamed Abdel Moneim, postponed the trial of 64 defendants in the case known in the media as “Smuggling Members of the Terrorist Organization Abroad.” The next session is scheduled for April 26, 2025, for the prosecution’s pleadings.

12. Case Name: The Integrated Entity

• Details: The Second Terrorism Circuit of the Criminal Court of First Instance, presided over by Judge Wagdy Mohamed Abdel Moneim, postponed the trial of 117 Muslim Brotherhood members in case no. 381 of 2024, registered under the Supreme State Security Prosecution as no. 9453 of 2024, known in the media as “Freedom and Justice Party Committees.” The next session is set for April 27, 2025, for the testimony of prosecution witnesses.

19. Case Name: Giza Cell

22. Case Name: Ramses Violence – Al-Fath Mosque

• Date: Tuesday, February 11, 2025

• Details: The Second Appeals Circuit, presided over by Judge Hamada El-Sawy, rejected the appeal submitted by defendant Moussa Yahia Mohamed Abdel Fattah in case no. 8615 of 2013, registered under the Azbakeya Police Department, and case no. 4163 of 2013, registered under North Cairo Prosecution, known in the media as “Al-Fath Mosque Violence.” The court upheld the previous ruling against the defendant and imposed legal costs.

23. Case Name: Revolutionary Guards

• Details: The Appeals Court, presided over by Judge Hamada El-Sawy, postponed the appeal filed by nine defendants accused of leading and managing a terrorist organization in the case known in the media as “Revolutionary Guards.” The next session is scheduled for April 13, 2025, to allow the defense team to prepare for pleadings.

24. Case Name: Hasm Militants 2

• Date: Tuesday, February 11, 2025
• Location: Courts Complex, Badr Prison Compound
• Details: The Second Circuit of the Criminal Court of First Instance, presided over by Judge Wagdy Mohamed Abdel Moneim, postponed the trial of 111 defendants accused of establishing a terrorist organization, misusing social media platforms, possessing unauthorized firearms, and financing terrorism in the case known in the media as “Hasm Militants 2.” The next session is scheduled for April 28, 2025, for the presentation of additional evidence.
