CFJ issues first weekly bulletin on key human rights cases updates for the period November 16–21, 2024

As part of its ongoing monitoring of legal developments related to important human rights cases in Egypt, the Committee for Justice (CFJ) has issued its first weekly bulletin detailing updates on significant cases for the week. The bulletin, published on its political cases agenda, aims to simplify access to session dates and case updates in a user-friendly format for the period from November 16 to 21, 2024. The updates are as follows:

  1. Case Name: ISIS Sohag

Session Date: Saturday, November 16, 2024
Location: Courts Complex, Badr Prison Complex
Proceedings:
The First Circuit of the Criminal Court, presided over by Judge Mohamed El-Said El-Sherbini and assisted by Judges Gharib Mohamed Metwally, Mahmoud Zidan, and Mohamed Nabil, postponed the trial of five individuals in the “ISIS Sohag Cell” case (Case No. 426 of 2024, First Settlement, registered as Case No. 13 of 2024 New Cairo, and No. 48 of 2024 State Security Felonies) to December 2, 2024, for further deliberations.

Proceedings:
The First Circuit of the Criminal Court, presided over by Judge Mohamed El-Said El-Sherbini, postponed the trial of 21 defendants in Case No. 374 of 2024 State Security Felonies, known in the media as the “Al-Beheira Cell,” to January 19, 2025, to hear witness testimonies.

  1. Case Name: Air Defense Stadium Events

Session Date: Sunday, November 17, 2024
Location: Courts Complex, Badr Prison Complex
Proceedings:
The First Circuit of the Criminal Court, presided over by Judge Mohamed El-Said El-Sherbini, adjourned the retrial of the juvenile defendant Ali Shaaban Abu Al-Ghaith in the case known in the media as the “Air Defense Stadium Events” to December 16, 2024, for the verdict.

  1. Case Name: Islamic Front Organization

Session Date: Monday, November 18, 2024
Location: Courts Complex, Badr Prison Complex
Proceedings:
The First Circuit of the Criminal Court, presided over by Judge Mohamed El-Said El-Sherbini, reserved the trial of three defendants, including a housewife, in the case known in the media as the “Islamic Front Organization” (Case No. 1320 of 2024 Fifth Settlement Felonies, registered as Case No. 52 of 2024 State Security Felonies), for a verdict to be delivered on January 20, 2025.

  • Omar Hany Farouk El-Bastawisi (28 years old) – Clothing trader (in custody)
  • Amer Gomaa Safi Ali (30 years old) – Agricultural worker (in custody)

  1. Case Name: Lone Wolves Cell

Session Date: Monday, November 18, 2024
Location: Courts Complex, Badr Prison Complex
Proceedings:
The First Circuit of the Criminal Court, presided over by Judge Mohamed El-Said El-Sherbini, postponed the first session of the trial of defendant Islam Samir Mohamed Bakkar in Case No. 382 of 2024 State Security Felonies, registered as Case No. 11971 of 2024 Warraq Felonies and known in the media as the “Lone Wolves Cell,” to January 5, 2025, for review and preparation, with the defendant remaining in custody.

  1. Case Name: Joining a Terrorist Group in Al-Omraneya

Session Date: Thursday, November 21, 2024
Location: Courts Complex, Badr Prison Complex
Proceedings:
The First Circuit of the Criminal Court, presided over by Judge Mohamed El-Said El-Sherbini, postponed the trial of defendant Sohaib Alaa Abdel Moneim (30 years old) – Graphic designer, accused of joining a terrorist group in Case No. 10832 of 2023 Omraneya Felonies, to December 15, 2024, for the defense arguments.
