African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights Emphasizes Prevention of Forced Internal Displacement and Freedom of Information

The 78th ordinary session of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights concluded with a resounding call for action to prevent forced internal displacement and uphold access to vital information across Africa.

 

Key highlights from the session include:

Examination of State Reports: The Commission reviewed Uganda’s sixth periodic report and Eritrea’s second and third periodic reports, issuing recommendations to address human rights concerns in these nations.

Extension of Study on Extrajudicial Executions: Notably, the Commission extended the timeline for a study on extrajudicial executions in Africa, underscoring the urgency to combat arbitrary and summary killings.

Protection of Workers’ Rights in the Informal Economy: Efforts are underway to develop guidelines and model laws aimed at safeguarding workers’ rights in Africa’s informal economy, a crucial step towards economic justice.

Internet Access During Elections: A resolution was adopted urging states to ensure open and secure internet access before, during, and after elections, emphasizing the importance of uninterrupted digital communication.

Prevention of Forced Internal Displacement: The Commission emphasized the need for states to address the root causes of forced internal displacement, including armed conflict and climate change, and called for ratification of the Kampala Convention to strengthen protection measures for internally displaced persons (IDPs).

The Commission’s resolutions underscore a commitment to advancing human rights across Africa, with a clear focus on protecting vulnerable populations and promoting transparency in governance.
