Egypt: The CFJ condemns arbitrary dismissal of Agricultural Bank employees and calls for their reinstatement and an end to punitive measures against them

The Committee for Justice (CFJ) has reported a protest staged by former employees of the Agricultural Bank on Sunday, April 27, in front of the main branch in Dokki, protesting the arbitrary termination of their employment contracts between 2020 and 2024. The demonstrators demanded to be reinstated to their jobs and an end to what they described as unjust treatment.

According to eyewitness accounts from participants in the protest, approximately 2,000 employees were dismissed without prior investigation or warning, despite the fact that most of them had permanent contracts, with some having served more than 20 years across various bank branches.

During the demonstration, protesters stated that the dismissals began after the current minister, Alaa Fares, assumed leadership of the bank, under pretexts such as financial violations or criticism expressed on social media platforms, without presenting conclusive evidence or referring any cases to the public prosecution.

For its part, the CFJ strongly condemns these arbitrary measures, describing them as a blatant violation of labor rights and principles of social justice. The committee holds the responsible authorities within the bank fully accountable for the consequences of this escalation, and calls for an immediate halt to such practices, the reinstatement of dismissed employees, and ensuring that all citizens are granted their rightful employment opportunities free from favoritism and political pressure.
