Less than 1 minute Reading Time: Minutes

The Committee for Justice (CFJ) has reported two deaths inside detention centers and prisons in Egypt, attributing them to deliberate medical neglect and poor conditions of detention.

The first case was that of politically detained Mohamed Abdel-Razek Ahmed Ghoneim in Damanhour Prison. He was from the village of Liko in Abu Kabir District, Sharqia Governorate, and was held in connection with Case No. 1238 of 2024, at the 10th of Ramadan Third Police Department. He died on Sunday, March 30.

The second case was that of Abdel-Fattah Mohamed Abdel-Maqsoud Obeido, a 60-year-old Arabic language teacher at Al-Azhar, from the village of Manshat Adham in Senbellawein District, Dakahlia Governorate. He had been detained since 2023 and died on Wednesday, April 32, due to poor detention conditions and deliberate medical neglect.

The CFJ condemns what happened to both victims and calls on the Egyptian authorities to conduct impartial, transparent, and prompt investigations into the circumstances of their deaths, to identify those responsible, and to ensure they are held accountable.
