The Committee for Justice (CFJ) has monitored the death of a worker injured in the explosion at the new power station of the Mahalla Spinning and Weaving Factory, which took place on Saturday, February 22. The worker succumbed to his injuries after days of suffering at Mansoura Hospital.
The deceased worker, Ayman Abu Al-Fadl, was among four workers who sustained severe burns in the explosion. While three others remained in critical condition, Abu Al-Fadl passed away on Tuesday, February 25.
The explosion occurred in a tank at the factory’s new power station, causing a partial fire and injuring four workers with varying degrees of burns. The injured workers were immediately transferred to the hospital, where three received medical treatment, while Abu Al-Fadl remained in critical condition until his passing.
Sources within the factory suggested that the explosion was likely due to years of negligence in maintaining the power station, which was not used to operate the entire factory but rather to supply certain annexes.
CFJ emphasizes that the recurrence of such incidents reflects a failure by companies and factories to adhere to occupational safety standards, endangering workers’ lives. The committee urges immediate preventive measures to ensure the safety of workers in industrial facilities.
Additionally, CFJ highlights that the persistence of such workplace incidents demonstrates a lack of oversight and preventive measures, citing that the industrial sector recorded 1,946 work-related injuries in 2023—representing 23.4% of total workplace injuries in the sector.
CFJ calls on the relevant authorities to launch an urgent investigation into the explosion and the worker’s death, ensuring that those responsible for maintenance and safety failures are held accountable and do not escape punishment. The committee stresses that preventing such incidents, which cost workers their lives, requires strict enforcement of safety regulations. CFJ also urges the provision of fair and adequate remedies for the deceased worker’s family and the injured.
