Geneva – August 1, 2024
The Committee for Justice (CFJ) has monitored the decision by the Appellate Division of the Tunis Court of Appeal, which in its session on Friday, July 26, 2024, reduced the sentence of journalist Borhane Bsaies from one year to eight months, according to lawyer Nizar Ayad.
Ayad stated, “The defense team has yet to fully understand the details of the reduced sentence and whether it pertains to one or both cases, as they await the official text of the ruling.”
Initially, the Criminal Division of the Tunis Primary Court had sentenced Bsaies to one year in prison for two opinion cases, with six months for each case.
CFJ opposes the reduced sentence issued by the Tunis Court of Appeal, demanding its dismissal and the immediate release of journalist Bsaies. CFJ also emphasizes the importance of supporting freedom of expression and opinion, as well as the freedom of the press and media in the country.
