The “Committee for Justice” (CFJ) has documented the worsening health condition of Tunisian activist Moncef El-Houaidi, who has been on hunger strike since December 5 inside Jendouba detention prison. This hunger strike is a protest against the one-year prison sentence issued against him on charges of “breach of trust.”
El-Houaidi described the ruling as “arbitrary,” asserting that he was not given a fair chance to defend himself during his trial.
Human rights sources and activists have confirmed that El-Houaidi’s health is significantly deteriorating due to the ongoing hunger strike, raising serious concerns about his safety.
El-Houaidi had previously hinted at resorting to a hunger strike during visits from a delegation of the Jendouba branch of the Human Rights League, the last of which occurred on November 27, 2024.
The sources added that another investigative case involving El-Houaidi is being pursued under “Decree 54,” where he faces accusations of committing an “offensive act against the President of the Republic.”
CFJ reiterates full solidarity with Moncef El-Houaidi in his hunger strike, urging Tunisian judicial authorities to suspend the sentence and ensure a retrial that upholds fair trial standards and respects the rights of defense. The committee also holds the authorities accountable for his safety amid his worsening health condition.
