The CFJ Issues Weekly Bulletin on Updates of Major Human Rights Cases for the Period from April 26 to May 1, 2025

As part of its ongoing monitoring of the legal situation related to key human rights cases in Egypt, the Committee for Justice (CFJ) has issued its weekly bulletin on the latest developments in major cases. The bulletin, published via its political case agenda, was launched to facilitate access to information regarding hearing dates and updates on human rights cases in a simplified and accessible format. The updates for the period from April 26 to May 1, 2025, are as follows:

 

1- Case Name: Haitham al-Arabi Case – Smuggling Terrorist Group Members’ Members Abroad Cell

  • Date: Saturday, April 26, 2025
  • Location: Court Complex, Badr Prison Compound
  • Details: The Second Circuit of the State Security Emergency Court, presided over by Judge Wajdi Mohamed Abdel Moneim, decided to postpone the trial of 64 defendants in the case known in media as “Smuggling Terrorist Group Members Abroad Cell” to the next session on May 14, for review and preparation and for the public prosecution’s pleadings.

 

2- Case Name: The Major Media-Based Terrorism Financing Network

  • Date: Saturday, April 26, 2025
  • Location: Court Complex, Badr Prison Compound
  • Details: The Second Circuit of First Instance Criminal Court, presided over by Judge Wajdi Mohamed Abdel Moneim, decided to postpone the trial of 35 defendants charged in the case known in media as “The Major Media-Based Terrorism Financing Network,” including businessmen, owners of large companies, contractors, graphic designers, and gold shop owners, to the next session on May 24, for the continuation of defense pleadings. It is worth noting that among the defendants are 22 fugitives and 13 currently detained.

 

3- Case Name: Foreign Currency Trading and Financing – Yahya Moussa and 16 Others

  • Date: Saturday, April 26, 2025
  • Location: Court Complex, Badr Prison Compound
  • Details: The Second Circuit of First Instance Criminal Court, presided over by Judge Wajdi Abdel Moneim, decided to postpone the trial of Muslim Brotherhood leader Yahya Moussa and 16 others in the foreign currency trading and financing case to the next session on May 14, for continuation of pleadings.

 

4- Case Name: Trial of Yahya Moussa and 57 Others for Joining ISIS

  • Date: Saturday, April 26, 2025
  • Location: Court Complex, Badr Prison Compound
  • Details: The Second Circuit of First Instance Criminal Court, presided over by Judge Wajdi Abdel Moneim, decided to postpone the trial of Muslim Brotherhood leader Yahya Moussa and 57 other defendants charged with joining the terrorist organization “ISIS,” and planning hostile operations aimed at destabilizing public order and threatening social peace and national security within the country, in case number 55/2024 Criminal of the Supreme State Security Prosecution, registered under number 1235/2024 Criminal of Omraniya Prosecution, to the next session on June 10, for pleadings.

 

5- Case Name: Al-Khanka Organization

  • Date: Saturday, April 26, 2025
  • Location: Court Complex, Badr Prison Compound
  • Details: The First Terrorism Circuit in Wadi El Natrun, presided over by Judge Sameh Abdel Hakim, decided to adjourn the hearing of the “Al-Khanka Organization” case to allow for the attendance of the defendants, to be rescheduled for the first day of the June court cycle.

 

6- Case Name: Menouf Muslim Brotherhood

  • Date: Saturday, April 26, 2025
  • Location: Court Complex, Badr Prison Compound
  • Details: The First Terrorism Circuit in Wadi El Natrun, presided over by Judge Sameh Abdel Hakim, decided to adjourn the hearing of the “Menouf Muslim Brotherhood” case to prepare for pleadings, to be rescheduled for the first day of the June court cycle.

 

7- Case Name: Manshiyet Nasser Cell

  • Date: Saturday, April 26, 2025
  • Location: Court Complex, Badr Prison Compound
  • Details: The Second Terrorism Circuit of First Instance Criminal Court, presided over by Judge Wajdi Abdel Moneim, ruled that the verdict issued against Osama Mohamed Qassem Abdel Hamid, the third defendant in the “Manshiyet Nasser Terror Cell” case, remains valid, due to the defendant’s failure to attend the trial either personally or through a representative, contrary to Article 995 of the Code of Criminal Procedures. The court had previously issued a default judgment on June 29, 2021, sentencing the defendant to 15 years of rigorous imprisonment after being convicted of joining a terrorist group.

 

8- Case Name: Freedom and Justice Party Committees

  • Date: Sunday, April 27, 2025
  • Location: Court Complex, Badr Prison Compound
  • Details: The Second Terrorism Circuit of First Instance Criminal Court, presided over by Judge Wajdi Abdel Moneim, decided to postpone the hearing of case number 381/2024 Criminal of the State Security Prosecution, registered under number 9453/2024 Criminal of Omraniya Prosecution, commonly known as the “Freedom and Justice Party Committees” case, in which 117 members of the Muslim Brotherhood are accused, to the next session on June 21, to hear testimonies of witnesses.

 

9- Case Name: Helwan ISIS 2

  • Date: Sunday, April 27, 2025
  • Location: Court Complex, Badr Prison Compound
  • Details: The Second Terrorism Circuit of First Instance Criminal Court, presided over by Judge Wajdi Abdel Moneim, decided to postpone the first hearing of the trial of five defendants in case number 388/2024 Criminal of the Supreme State Security Prosecution, commonly known as the “Helwan ISIS” case, to the next session on June 21, for the attendance of the defendants from their detention centers.

 

10- Case Name: Hasm Terrorist Group (2) / “Liwaa al-Thawra”

  • Date: Monday, April 28, 2025
  • Location: Court Complex, Badr Prison Compound
  • Details: The Second Terrorism Circuit of First Instance Criminal Court, presided over by Judge Wajdi Abdel Moneim, decided to postpone the trial of 111 defendants accused in the “Hasm” and “Liwaa al-Thawra” case, charged with forming a terrorist group, misusing social media platforms, possession of unlicensed firearms, and committing acts of terrorism financing, to the next session on June 22, for the attendance of the defendants from their detention centers.

 

11- Case Name: Abu El Fotouh Case – Broadcasting False News Regarding Tiran and Sanafir Islands Agreement

  • Date: Monday, April 28, 2025
  • Location: Court Complex, Badr Prison Compound
  • Details: The Criminal Court of State Security Emergency, presided over by Judge Wajdi Abdel Moneim, decided to postpone the retrial of Abdel Moneim Abou El Fotouh, former presidential candidate and head of Strong Egypt Party, in case number 1059/2021, to the next session on May 25, for reviewing the case files and preparing the defense.

 

12- Case Name: Ultras Ahlawy

  • Date: Tuesday, April 29, 2025
  • Location: Court Complex, Badr Prison Compound
  • Details: The Second Circuit of First Instance Criminal Court, presided over by Judge Wajdi Abdel Moneim, acquitted defendant Mohamed Refaat Khalfallah Alsaman in the case commonly known as the “Ultras Ahlawy” case, from the charges brought against him during retrial proceedings. It is worth noting that the defendant had been sentenced in absentia on June 10, 2015, to life imprisonment for charges of displaying force, setting fires, and damaging public and private property.

 

13- Case Name: Explosives Cell in Kerdasa

  • Date: Tuesday, April 29, 2025
  • Location: Court Complex, Badr Prison Compound
  • Details: The Second Circuit of First Instance Criminal Court, presided over by Judge Wajdi Abdel Moneim, decided to postpone the trial of 13 defendants in case number 16563/2023 Criminal of Kerdasa Police Station, registered under number 2529/2023 Inquest of the Supreme State Security Prosecution, commonly known as the “Kerdasa Explosives Cell” case, to the next session on June 23, for the completion of evidence inspection.

 

14- Case Name: Smuggling Dollars to Muslim Brotherhood Members Abroad

  • Date: Tuesday, April 29, 2025
  • Location: Court Complex, Badr Prison Compound
  • Details: The Second Circuit of First Instance Criminal Court, presided over by Judge Wajdi Abdel Moneim, decided to postpone the trial of a flight attendant working for a well-known airline company and six others involved in smuggling foreign currency to Muslim Brotherhood members abroad, in case number 12851/2024 Criminal of First District, registered under number 386/2024 Criminal of the Supreme State Security Prosecution, to the next session on June 23, for the prosecution’s pleadings.

 

15- Case Name: Trial of a Defendant and His Wife for Joining ISIS

  • Date: Tuesday, April 29, 2025
  • Location: Court Complex, Badr Prison Compound
  • Details: The Second Circuit of First Instance Criminal Court, presided over by Judge Wajdi Abdel Moneim, decided to postpone the trial of the accused Ahmed Naji Shahata Abdel Ghany Ahmed and his wife Donya Alaa Abdel Sayed Ahmed, charged with joining the terrorist organization “ISIS,” to the next session on May 24, for review and preparation.
