Press release
Dr. Alice Jill Edwards, the UN Special Rapporteur on Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment, expressed deep concern over allegations of sexual torture against Palestinians by Israeli forces.
– Calls for Investigation into Disturbing Allegations:
In a recently issued statement, Dr. Edwards described these allegations as disturbing and called for an immediate and transparent investigation into the reports. According to the statement, there have been numerous credible reports of Palestinians, including men, women, and children, being subjected to sexual violence and other forms of torture while in detention by Israeli authorities. These acts reportedly include threats of sexual assault, physical violence, and degrading treatment aimed at intimidating and humiliating detainees.
– A Gross Violation of International Law:
Dr. Edwards emphasized that sexual torture constitutes a gross violation of international law, including the Convention Against Torture, to which Israel is a signatory. She urged Israeli authorities to investigate these allegations immediately and ensure accountability for any violations. Dr. Edwards stated, “The use of sexual violence as a form of torture is abhorrent and unacceptable under any circumstances,” adding, “It is imperative that Israel meets its obligations under international law to prevent torture and ill-treatment and prosecute those responsible.”
– Calls for Holding (Israel) Accountable:
The UN expert also called on the international community to hold Israel accountable for fulfilling its human rights obligations and to support efforts aimed at providing justice and reparations for victims. She stressed the importance of protecting human rights defenders and others who have exposed these violations, noting that they are often subjected to retaliation and intimidation.
These allegations of sexual torture come amid ongoing tensions and violence in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, raising serious concerns about the treatment of detainees and the overall human rights situation in the region. Dr. Edwards reaffirmed her commitment to working with all parties to ensure the elimination of torture and ill-treatment and to secure justice and support for victims.
