Iraq: CERD commends Iraq’s progress in racial discrimination efforts, calls for continued action

Geneva, August 2024 – The UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD) has praised Iraq for its recent efforts to improve the rights and protections of minority groups.

During a recent session, the Committee highlighted Iraq’s legal reforms and policy initiatives aimed at tackling racial discrimination.

Despite these advancements, CERD urged Iraq to address ongoing challenges, particularly concerning internally displaced persons and the enforcement of anti-discrimination laws. The Committee emphasized the need for sustained progress in ensuring equality and justice for all citizens.

 

Call to Action:

CERD called on Iraq to intensify its efforts to fully implement anti-discrimination measures, particularly in areas affected by conflict and displacement. The Committee emphasized that sustained commitment is necessary to achieve lasting equality and protect the rights of all citizens, regardless of ethnicity or religion.
