The Committee for Justice (CFJ) has revealed the death of an Egyptian citizen named Abd El-Rahman Mohamed Hassan, which occurred inside the investigation’s unit at Sayeda Zeinab Police Station on Monday, 19 May 2025, just hours after his arrest, under circumstances strongly indicating that he was subjected to torture leading to his death.
The monitoring teams affiliated with the Committee were able to document detailed testimonies from a number of civilian witnesses, neighbors, and workers in shops near the police station, as well as consistent statements from internal security sources, confirming that the security force led by Lieutenant Karlos, the investigations officer at the station, physically assaulted Abdel Rahman with severe beatings in public before dragging him into the investigation’s unit.
Investigations revealed that the victim was detained around 2:00 AM while walking with a friend within the station’s jurisdiction; his friend managed to flee while Abd El-Rahman was apprehended without any clear legal justification or being caught in the act of committing an offense.
According to multiple field accounts, the victim was brutally beaten in front of several bystanders before being taken inside the station, where a detention report numbered 123/2025 Administrative – Sayeda Zeinab was prepared, and he was then transferred to the interrogation room.
Following this, Abd El-Rahman was subjected inside the station to a painful physical torture session lasting more than two hours, apparently in an attempt to force him to provide information about the identity of the person he was with. He refused, which led to a severe deterioration in his health and ultimately his death before being transferred to the holding cell or presented to the prosecution.
His body was transferred to Al-Mounira Hospital, and later to Zeinhom Morgue, where it was washed and wrapped without the knowledge of his family. The family was not informed of his death until during the investigation before the prosecution. They strongly denied the official narrative attributing the death to swallowing a packet of narcotics, demanding instead an autopsy to reveal the truth.
The CFJ expresses strong condemnation of the incident, considering it part of a broader pattern of human rights violations occurring in places of detention across Egypt. The committee calls for an immediate and independent investigation into all circumstances surrounding the case and determining the real cause of death.
The CFJ also emphasizes the necessity of conducting a thorough autopsy on the victim’s body by impartial and independent medical authorities in order to establish the true cause of death and determine whether it resulted from physical torture, especially given the visible bruises found on the body that support the torture hypothesis.
Furthermore, the committee calls for holding all those responsible and involved in torturing the victim and causing his death accountable, without discrimination or bias, and preventing their escape from punishment, which has become a common feature in such cases. It stresses the importance of holding accountable the security entities that attempted to cover up the incident by washing and wrapping the body before informing the family or notifying them of his death.
