Egypt: The CFJ Documents Death of Political Detainee Due to Medical Negligence at Menya Al-Qamh Police Station in Sharqia

Less than 1 minute Reading Time: Minutes

The Committee for Justice (CFJ) has documented the death of political detainee Belal Raaft Mohammed Ali, aged 55, inside his place of detention at Menya Al-Qamh police station in Sharqia governorate, Egypt, due to medical negligence.

According to the committee, “Raafat,” who was from the village of Bani Quraysh in Menya Al-Qamh district, had suffered from polio-induced paralysis since childhood. During his period of detention, his health condition deteriorated significantly, yet he did not receive appropriate medical care. The center’s administration reportedly refused—despite repeated requests from his family and lawyer—to provide necessary treatment.

The CFJ condemns this case of death and calls for an urgent and transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding Raafat’s death, as well as accountability for those responsible for the medical negligence that cost him his life within an official detention facility.

With these cases, the number of deaths documented by the CFJ inside prisons and detention centers in Egypt since the beginning of 2025 has risen to 14. This follows the documentation of 50 deaths during the previous year, 2024.

Verified information about deaths during detention in Egypt can be obtained through the “Justice Watch Archive,” a service provided by the CFJ. It contains information on over 14,000 victims and more than 30,000 violations, monitoring abuses across over 500 detention sites in Egypt.
