Press Release
The Committee for Justice (CFJ) noted the issuance of a court ruling overturning the arbitrary decision by the Union Committee for Land Transport Workers in Cairo, which had suspended union leader Mahmoud Abdel Hamid from practicing his union activities without any clear justification or legal basis for the ban.
– Arbitrary decision:
The committee had initially decided to bar Abdel Hamid from attending the committee’s board meetings during the 2022-2026 union term, without providing clear reasons or justifications for the ban. In response, Abdel Hamid approached the “Al-Waily” police station to file a report inquiring about the reasons behind his suspension, aiming to identify any accusations against him so he could defend himself. Despite his formal request for clarification, the union committee failed to respond, compelling him to obtain an official copy of the report.
It was revealed that the union committee issued the suspension decision on April 8, 2023, citing Articles (45 and 46) of the Egyptian Trade Union Organizations Law No. 213 of 2017, yet without specifying the grounds for the suspension.
After the union committee refused to follow legal procedures, Abdel Hamid challenged the decision by filing Case No. 5190 for 2023 with the 22nd Labor Division of the North Cairo Court, seeking to nullify the decision as it was in violation of the law.
– Welcome and call for immediate execution:
CFJ welcomes the ruling issued in favor of the union leader of the Land Transport Workers Committee in Cairo, Mahmoud Abdel Hamid, and calls for its immediate implementation. The committee further urges adherence to the Egyptian Trade Unions Law and supports opening the space for labor rights advocates to engage in union and labor activities safely and effectively.
