Press release

The Committee for Justice (CFJ) has reported that Mudathir Mohamed Abdel Hamid, a 24-year-old political detainee and engineering student in Egypt, declared a hunger strike on Sunday, August 29th, in protest of his continued detention for 11 months under harsh conditions due to his support for the Palestinian cause.

– Denial of Basic Rights:

In a leaked letter, Mudathir explained that his hunger strike was in response to the intransigence of the administration at Al-Ashar prison in Ramadan City, which denied him the right to exercise and exposure to sunlight for the entire duration of his detention, except during brief visits. He also mentioned that the court repeatedly denied him the opportunity to speak during five consecutive hearings on the renewal of his detention and failed to review the case files, evidence of his innocence, and documents submitted to the prosecution.

Mudathir emphasized in his letter that he had attempted to meet with the National Security officer inside the prison to present his demands, but so far, there has been no clear response from the prison administration.

– Calls for His Release:

CFJ condemns the arbitrary actions against the student, Mudathir Mohamed Abdel Hamid, and calls on the prison administration to positively address his demands—which are his legitimate rights—and urges his immediate, unconditional release.
