Press Release

The “Committee for Justice” (CFJ) has documented the death of a political detainee at the Badr Rehabilitation and Correctional Center (Badr 3) due to a severe and worsening health crisis amidst recurring cases of deaths caused by medical negligence in Egyptian prisons.

The deceased, a 70-year-old civil engineer named Abdel Fattah Abdel Azim Abdel Fattah Attia, passed away on Monday, December 16, 2024, in the prison’s medical center.

– Persistent Medical Neglect and Deliberate Denial

Abdel Fattah had been held in pretrial detention at Badr Rehabilitation and Correctional Center (Badr 3) in connection with Case No. 1934 of 2021, listed under the Supreme State Security Prosecution, which was recently referred to the Criminal Court.

In the final weeks of his life, his health deteriorated significantly, necessitating his transfer to the prison’s medical facility. He suffered from serious liver, heart, and kidney issues, requiring regular dialysis. Despite his chronic illnesses, advanced age, inability to move independently, and total reliance on daily assistance, the Egyptian authorities repeatedly denied his lawyer’s requests for medical release, in flagrant violation of his legal rights to healthcare.

Calls for Investigation and Accountability

CFJ emphasizes that this case highlights the ongoing policy of medical negligence in Egyptian prisons and the escalation of violations against detainees, which renews calls for improved conditions and the protection of detainees’ fundamental rights.

CFJ is demanding an impartial, prompt, and transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding this death, alongside ensuring accountability for those responsible to prevent impunity.
