Press Release
The “Committee for Justice” (CFJ) has monitored the death of a political detainee at Wadi El-Natrun Prison due to deliberate medical negligence and poor detention conditions.
– Deliberate Medical Negligence:
According to CFJ, the deceased was identified as Khaled Ibrahim Mohamed, a 64-year-old accountant residing in Abu Sawir, Ismailia Governorate. He suffered a stroke 10 days prior and was transferred to a hospital in Alexandria, where he passed away.
Egyptian security forces had arrested Mohamed in 2014, detaining him in connection with the case widely known in the media as the “Ismailia Courthouse Complex Case.”
Rights Group Condemnation and Call for Investigation:
CFJ strongly condemnes the death of detainee Khaled Ibrahim Mohamed while in custody, describing the incident as further evidence of deliberate medical neglect and poor detention conditions in Egyptian prisons. The committee calls for an urgent and independent investigation to determine the circumstances of the death and hold accountable those responsible for any negligence or violations that contributed to this tragedy.
CFJ emphasizes that the recurrence of such incidents represents a blatant violation of detainees’ fundamental rights. The committee urges the Egyptian authorities to improve prison conditions and ensure the provision of necessary healthcare for all detainees in accordance with international human rights standards.
– 49 Deaths in custody in 2024:
This incident brings the total number of deaths recorded by CFJ in Egyptian prisons and detention centers since the beginning of 2024 to 49. Accurate information about death cases during detention in Egypt can be obtained through the Justice Watch Archive service provided by CFJ, which contains information about more than 14,000 victims and over 30,000 violations. It also monitors violations inside more than 500 places of detention in Egypt.
