Geneva – August 11, 2024
In a session held on Monday, July 29, 2024, the Third Circuit of the First Instance Criminal Court, convening at the Badr Court Complex, sentenced two defendants to death by hanging in the case known in the media as the “ISIS Kerdasa Cell.”
The court, presided over by Judge Wagdy Mohamed Abdel Moneim and flanked by judges Wael Omran and Diaa Hamed Amer, also handed down a 15-year sentence of rigorous imprisonment to one defendant, 10 years of rigorous imprisonment to two others, and five years of rigorous imprisonment to another defendant.
The names of those sentenced to death are Yasser Yehia Saeed Abou Trika and Ali Ayad Ali Shennan.
The court further ordered that the convicted individuals be placed under police surveillance for five years following the completion of their sentences. Additionally, they were placed on the lists of terrorist entities and individuals, as per the provisions of Law No. 8 of 2015 regarding the regulation of terrorist entities and individuals, along with its amendments.
The “Committee for Justice” (CFJ) has rejected these death sentences, calling for their suspension and for the entire case to be retried before a court that upholds internationally recognized standards of fair trial. CFJ also urges the Egyptian authorities to suspend the death penalty, as has been previously advocated by numerous UN communications, and to replace it with less severe penalties, viewing death sentences as an affront to the right to life.
