Press release
On Sunday, September 1st, the East Tanta Misdemeanor Appeals Court ordered the release of 9 workers from the “Samanoud Textiles” company—among them 4 female workers—who had been detained for 15 days pending investigation by the East Tanta Public Prosecution. This detention followed their participation in a strike on Wednesday, August 28th, demanding the implementation of the minimum wage.
The Committee for Justice (CFJ) noted that it had observed the workers being subjected to interrogation without the presence of their lawyers. Meanwhile, the company’s workers continued their strike for the 13th consecutive day, demanding higher wages and the release of their colleagues.
During a board meeting on Thursday, August 29th, the company’s management rejected the workers’ demand for the application of the minimum wage. However, the management decided to provide a special incentive starting in September, amounting to 200 Egyptian pounds for production departments, and urged the workers to return to work following new order contracts. Despite this, the workers remained determined to continue their strike until their demands were met.
CFJ opposes the security measures taken against the striking workers of “Samanoud Textiles” and calls for the immediate execution of the decision to release the detained workers. CFJ also urges the company’s management to positively engage with the workers’ demands.
