Geneva – January 17, 2024

On Sunday, January 14, 2024, printing workers in Akhbar Al-Youm newspaper demonstrated in front of the central administration building in protest against the delay in the payment of their annual profits in light of the deteriorating economic conditions in the country.

The protesting workers detained the chairman of the government press corporation inside the building, where negotiations took place between them in the presence of the security authorities, which resulted in the management’s decision to pay the annual profits in two installments.

The protesting workers rejected this agreement and announced their sit-in in front of the administration building until their demands were achieved by disbursing their annual profits at once. This prompted the management to respond to their demands and announce the disbursement of annual profits on January 31.

The Committee for Justice appreciates the efforts of the workers of Akhbar Al-Youm printing presses to obtain their rights and welcomes the administration’s decision to respond to their demands, calling the administration to open an ongoing dialogue with workers’ representatives to ensure effective communication to improve their financial conditions.
