Banjul – 26 October 2026
The Committee for Justice (CFJ) welcomes the visit of the United Nations Special Rapporteur on extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary executions, Dr. Morris Tidball-Binz, to The Gambia from 5 to 16 October 2026. The visit aimed to assess the protection of the right to life, investigate unlawful deaths, and follow up on the implementation of the recommendations of the Truth, Reconciliation and Reparations Commission (TRRC).
CFJ stresses that progress in The Gambia’s transitional justice process must translate into concrete measures to ensure independent and effective investigations into past and ongoing violations, hold those responsible accountable, and guarantee victims and their families the right to truth, justice and reparation.
CFJ calls on the Gambian authorities to implement the Special Rapporteur’s recommendations, strengthen accountability mechanisms, and ensure that perpetrators of human rights violations do not enjoy impunity, thereby safeguarding the right to life, human rights and the rule of law.
