Libya: Committee for Justice Documents the Enforced Disappearance of Former Information Minister Mohamed Sharaf El‑Din Al‑Fitouri and Calls for the Disclosure of His Fate

Reading Time: Less than 1 minute Minutes

The Committee for Justice (CFJ) has documented the disappearance of Dr. Mohamed Sharaf El‑Din Al‑Fitouri, a Libyan academic and media figure, former Minister of Information, and Dean of the School of Media at the Libyan Academy for Graduate Studies, after contact with him was lost in the Janzour area west of the Libyan capital, Tripoli.

According to information documented by CFJ, contact with Dr. Al‑Fitouri was lost shortly after he left the premises of the Libyan Academy for Graduate Studies. His whereabouts remain unknown, and no information has been made available regarding the reasons for his disappearance or the authority that may be responsible for his detention.

The Committee for Justice expressed concern over the continued concealment of Dr. Al‑Fitouri’s fate and whereabouts, warning that detention outside the framework of the law and the targeting of academics and media professionals raise serious concerns regarding the rights to liberty, personal security, freedom of expression, and academic freedom.

CFJ calls for the immediate disclosure of the whereabouts of Dr. Mohamed Sharaf El‑Din Al‑Fitouri, guarantees for his physical and psychological safety, and his immediate and unconditional release.

The Committee further calls for the opening of a prompt, independent, and transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding his disappearance, the identification of the authority responsible, and accountability for anyone found to have participated in or facilitated his detention outside the framework of the law.
