The Committee for Justice (CFJ), together with DIGNITY – Danish Institute Against Torture and the Egyptian Commission for Rights and Freedoms (ECRF), will organize a high-level side event entitled “From Recommendations to Implementation: Civil Society, UN and ACHPR Perspectives on Egypt’s Second National Human Rights Strategy” on Monday, 14 September 2026, from 14:00 to 15:00 in Room XI at the Palais des Nations in Geneva, on the margins of the 63rd Session of the United Nations Human Rights Council.
The event comes as Egypt prepares its Second National Human Rights Strategy, providing an important opportunity to move from human rights recommendations and commitments towards concrete, measurable and independently monitored implementation.
Bringing together perspectives from civil society, UN human rights mechanisms and the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR), the discussion will examine how recommendations from these different actors can inform the new strategy and contribute to meaningful reform, particularly in the areas of criminal justice, torture prevention, detention safeguards, fair-trial guarantees and independent oversight.
The event will also examine the role of the Addis Ababa Roadmap in strengthening cooperation and complementarity between UN Special Procedures and the Special Mechanisms of the ACHPR, and how this cooperation, together with sustained civil society engagement, can strengthen follow-up, accountability and the effective implementation of human rights recommendations in Egypt.
The discussion will be moderated by Ahmed Mefreh, Executive Director of CFJ, with the participation of Aua Baldé, Member of the UN Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances (WGEID); Commissioner Idrissa Sow, Chairperson of the ACHPR; Commissioner Litha Musyimi-Ogana of the ACHPR; Giorgio Caracciolo of DIGNITY; and Mohamed Lotfy of ECRF.
