The Committee for Justice (CFJ) has documented the continued detention of more than 6,000 migrants in the city of Benghazi, eastern Libya, including approximately 3,000 Sudanese nationals, amid reports of deteriorating humanitarian and health conditions inside detention facilities.
According to information documented by CFJ, the detainees, who come from various African countries, were arrested by authorities in eastern Libya on allegations related to irregular migration. Reports indicate that those detained include large numbers of young people, women, and children, and that they are being held in conditions described as extremely poor, with allegations of treatment that undermines human dignity.
The Committee for Justice calls on the Libyan authorities to ensure respect for the rights of all detained migrants, to release those held arbitrarily or subject them to legal procedures consistent with international standards, and to provide the necessary medical care and improve detention conditions.
CFJ also stressed the importance of granting independent humanitarian and monitoring organizations access to detention facilities in order to assess and verify the conditions of detainees and ensure the protection of their fundamental rights.
