Libya: Committee for Justice Documents the Arrest of a Civilian in Derna and Calls for the Protection of Freedom of Expression and an End to Arbitrary Arrests

The Committee for Justice (CFJ) has documented the arrest of Libyan citizen Ali Fathi Tarbah on Tuesday, 5 May 2026, by the Internal Security Agency in the city of Derna, before he was transferred to the agency’s headquarters in Benghazi.

According to CFJ’s documentation, the arrest was carried out in connection with criticisms he had published regarding the mechanisms for distributing housing units and determining beneficiaries of compensation.

The Committee for Justice stated that this incident raises serious concerns about the use of arrest in cases related to freedom of opinion and expression, noting that the continuation of such practices negatively affects the environment for rights and public freedoms.

CFJ calls for respect for legal and constitutional guarantees protecting freedom of opinion and expression, ensuring that arbitrary detention is not used against critical views, and requiring that any detention measures be subject to full judicial oversight.
