The Committee for Justice (CFJ) condemns the attack on El‑Daein Teaching Hospital in East Darfur State, which resulted in the killing of no fewer than 64 civilians, most of them women and children, and the injury of approximately 113 others, according to documented reports and official statements.
The Director‑General of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, confirmed that the hospital was struck on Friday, 20 March 2026, causing extensive damage that rendered it completely out of service and deprived the local population of essential medical services amid rapidly deteriorating humanitarian conditions.
CFJ highlighted that targeting a medical facility housing patients and civilians constitutes one of the most severe violations, especially given the presence of women and children among the victims—underscoring the devastating human toll of the attack.
The Committee stressed that attacks on hospitals and medical facilities represent a flagrant violation of international humanitarian law, which affords special protection to healthcare centers and medical personnel and strictly prohibits any form of assault or obstruction of their work.
CFJ calls for an urgent, independent investigation into the bombing of El‑Daein Teaching Hospital, the identification and prosecution of those responsible, and an immediate halt to all attacks on medical facilities. The Committee further calls for ensuring the protection of civilians and all humanitarian and health workers, as well as taking rapid measures to restore the hospital’s operations and provide essential medical services to those affected.
