Egypt: CFJ Documents Assaults Inside Wadi Al-Natrun Prison 440 and Calls for Ending Violations Against Detainees and Launching Investigation

The Committee for Justice (CFJ) has documented a serious escalation of human rights violations inside Wadi Al-Natrun Prison 440, after Chief Investigator Mohamed Abdel-Mottaleb and National Security officer known as Mohamed El-Lahouni, along with security personnel and criminal inmates, assaulted three political detainees late last week.

According to CFJ, a security force stormed Room (7A) in Ward 2, conducting a search marked by insults and verbal abuse. When detainees objected to the manner of the search, the force confiscated all living essentials from the room before subjecting three detainees to severe beatings, electric shocks, and stripping them naked while shackling their hands behind their backs.

CFJ reported that the three detainees were transferred to disciplinary cells since Wednesday afternoon, where they have been held without food, water, or clothing despite suffering from chronic illnesses.

The detainees are: Abdel-Gid Radwan Abdel-Hamid Amara, Salah Salah Abdel-Ati Youssef (Monufia), and Yasser Mohamed Abdel-Rahim Borai (Ismailia), all detained since the dispersal of the Rabaa sit-in.

The prison administration also dispersed the remaining detainees in the room to other wards, threatening further reprisals and transfers to distant prisons, sparking widespread anger inside the facility.

CFJ holds Egyptian authorities—particularly the Ministry of Interior, National Security Agency, and Public Prosecution—fully accountable for what is happening inside Wadi Al-Natrun Prison 440. The committee calls for an urgent and transparent investigation into these assaults and demands the prosecution of those responsible to end impunity.

CFJ further stresses the importance of respecting detainees’ fundamental human rights, including the right to humane treatment and protection from torture and ill-treatment, as guaranteed under international conventions ratified by Egypt.
