Geneva – June 25, 2024
The Committee for Justice (CFJ) has monitored the suicide of a Russian detainee in 10th of Ramadan Women’s Prison in Al-Sharqia Governorate, Egypt, citing inhumane detention conditions as the cause.
Sources indicate that the detainee faced severe conditions and mistreatment, leading to a decline in her mental health and ultimately her suicide in her cell.
This incident coincides with a series of sudden transfers of prison officers by the prison authority, bringing in officers from Al-Qanater Women’s Prison without explanation for these abrupt changes.
CFJ condemns the continued disregard by Egyptian authorities for detention conditions in their facilities and calls on the international community and UN mechanisms to take serious action. CFJ demands a transparent, impartial, and prompt investigation into this suicide, holding those responsible for the harsh conditions accountable.
