Egypt: CFJ documents new death of a political detainee in Gamasa prison, Dakahlia Governorate

The Committee for Justice (CFJ) documents a new death case in Egypt of the political detainee, Mahmoud Abd al-Rahim, in Gamasa maximum security prison, Dakahlia Governorate.

Death two months after death of wife and daughter

Abd al-Rahim had been sentenced to three years in prison, pending case No. 345/135 of 2014 Ismailia Military Felonies, known in the media as the “Ismailia Courts Complex” case.

His daughter Hagar, died on May 28, in a traffic accident while she was on her way to visit him in prison with his wife, who was injured in the same accident, and she also died on June 5.

24 deaths in custody in Egypt in 2023

Thus, the death cases documented by CFJ since the beginning of 2023, inside detention facilities in Egypt, have risen to 24 deaths, the last of which was Rami Hussein, who died on Monday, August 7, 2023, inside the Dar al-Salam police station in Cairo at the hands of an officer in the department, Abd al-Rahman Rajai, who tortured him for refusing to work as a security guide. It also monitors violations in more than 500 detention facilities in Egypt.
