UN Human Rights Chief to Visit Sudan Amid Ongoing Armed Conflict and Widespread Displacement

Less than 1 minute

The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, is expected to undertake an official visit to Sudan from 14 to 18 January 2026, at a time when the country continues to face severe human rights and humanitarian challenges linked to the ongoing armed conflict since April 2023.

The visit will include meetings with authorities in Port Sudan, alongside engagements with Sudanese civil society actors and the United Nations Country Team. The High Commissioner is also expected to travel to the Northern State, including the Al Afad gathering site, where he will meet civilians displaced by the conflict in Darfur and Kordofan, as well as humanitarian organizations operating in displacement settings.

The visit comes more than three years after the High Commissioner’s last official mission to Sudan in November 2022, and takes place against the backdrop of large-scale displacement, continued violations of international human rights and humanitarian law, and a rapidly shrinking space for civil society and independent actors.

At the conclusion of his visit, the High Commissioner is expected to hold two press conferences on Sunday, 18 January 2026, one in Port Sudan and a second in Nairobi, Kenya.

Video coverage and broadcast materials from the visit will be made available through the UNifeed platform: https://media.un.org/unifeed/en
