The CFJ Issues Weekly Bulletin on Updates of Major Human Rights Cases for the Period from May 10 to May 15, 2025

As part of its ongoing monitoring of the legal situation related to key human rights cases in Egypt, the Committee for Justice (CFJ) has issued its weekly bulletin detailing the latest developments in major cases. The bulletin, published through its political case agenda, was launched to facilitate access to information regarding hearing dates and updates on human rights cases in a simplified and accessible format. Below are the updates for the period from May 10 to May 15, 2025:

 

1- Case Name: Omraneya Cell

  • Date: Saturday, May 10, 2025
  • Location: Court Complex, Badr Prison Compound
  • Details: The Second Appellate Circuit decided to postpone the appeal submitted by defendants Ahmed Badawi Ibrahim Hakim and Mohamed Khalaf Juma Ahmed in the case commonly known as “Daesh Omraneya,” to May 13, 2025, to review documents.

 

2- Case Name: Attack on Atfih Police Station

  • Date: Saturday, May 10, 2025
  • Location: Court Complex, Badr Prison Compound
  • Details: The Second Appellate Circuit decided to reserve the ruling on the appeal submitted by defendant Mahmoud Abdelallah Mahmoud Imam, along with defendants Di’aa Abdel Aal Abdelmohsen Ali and Ali Awais Fathi Abdelwahab, in the case known as “Attack on Atfih Police Station,” to be announced on June 11, 2025.

 

3- Case Name: Moaz Al-Sharqawy – Forgery Cell in Al-Marg

  • Date: Saturday, May 10, 2025
  • Location: Court Complex, Badr Prison Compound
  • Details: The Second Criminal Circuit of the Criminal Court (First Instance) decided to reserve the ruling on the trial of 19 defendants accused of joining and financing a terrorist group and forging official documents for terrorist purposes—commonly referred to as the “Forgery Cell in Al-Marg”—to be announced on June 24, 2025.

 

4- Case Name: Wilayat al-Delta (Delta Province)

  • Date: Saturday, May 10, 2025
  • Location: Court Complex, Badr Prison Compound
  • Details: The Second Criminal Circuit (First Instance) decided to postpone the trial of 9 defendants in Case No. 379/2024 Criminal Court of State Security Affairs, registered under No. 13552/2024 Criminal Court of Helwan, known as “Wilayat al-Delta Terrorist Case,” to June 24, 2025, to allow public prosecution’s pleadings.

 

5- Case Name: Air Defense Events

  • Date: Saturday, May 10, 2025
  • Location: Court Complex, Badr Prison Compound
  • Details: An Appellate Circuit at the Criminal Court, presided over by Judge Hamada El-Sawi, accepted the appeal submitted by defendant Ali Shaaban Abu Ghita (a minor), who was tried in the case known as “Air Defense Events,” modifying his sentence from three years’ imprisonment to one year in prison.

 

6- Case Name: Killing of Officer Wael Tahoun – Special Operations Cells in Al-Nozha

  • Date: Sunday, May 11, 2025
  • Location: Court Complex, Badr Prison Compound
  • Details: The Second Criminal Circuit decided to postpone the trial of 41 defendants in Case No. 1430/2018 State Security Prosecution File, registered under No. 1149/2024 Criminal Court of Al-Nozha, known as “Special Operations Cells in Al-Nozha” which includes attacks against the New Cairo courthouse and the Al-Nozha Post Office bombing, to June 22, 2025, to hear testimonies of witnesses.

 

7- Case Name: Bombing of St. Nemeh Church in Al-Marg

  • Date: Sunday, May 11, 2025
  • Location: Court Complex, Badr Prison Compound
  • Details: The Second Appellate Circuit decided to postpone the appeal submitted by six defendants in Case No. 31369/2023 Criminal Court of Al-Marg, known as the “St. Nemeh Church Bombing Cell,” to July 13, 2025, to allow the appearance of original defense attorneys.

 

8- Case Name: Al-Madharin Cells

  • Date: Sunday, May 11, 2025
  • Location: Court Complex, Badr Prison Compound
  • Details: The Second First Instance Criminal Circuit decided to postpone the trial of 46 defendants in Case No. 380/2024 Criminal Court of State Security Affairs, registered under No. 14874/2024 Criminal Court of Al-Agouza Police Station, known as “Al-Madharin Cells,” to July 12, 2025, to allow the attendance of detained defendants.

 

9- Case Name: Wilaya of Ismailia

  • Date: Sunday, May 11, 2025
  • Location: Court Complex, Badr Prison Compound
  • Details: An Appellate Circuit decided to postpone the appeal filed by five defendants in Case No. 6482/2022 Criminal Court of Shorouk, charged with joining a terrorist group in the case known as the “Wilaya of Ismailia Cell,” to June 12, 2025, to allow the appellants to attend.

 

10- Case Name: Ramses – Al-Fateh Mosque Events

  • Date: Sunday, May 11, 2025
  • Location: Court Complex, Badr Prison Compound
  • Details: The Second Appellate Circuit accepted an appeal, in form and substance, filed by defendant Mostafa Muhammad Mahmoud Morsi in Case No. 8615/2013 Police Department of Azbakeya and No. 4163/2013 North Cairo Criminal Court, known as the “Al-Fateh Mosque Events,” modifying the sentence to three years’ imprisonment with aggravating circumstances.

 

11- Case Name: Sabt Al-Salam Violent Demonstrations

  • Date: Monday, May 12, 2025
  • Location: Court Complex, Badr Prison Compound
  • Details: The Second Criminal Circuit (First Instance) decided to postpone the retrial of defendants Mostafa Hamdy Ibraheim Muhammad and Mohamed Abdelhamid Muhammad Ismail in Case No. 20336/2019 Criminal Court of Al-Salam Thaan, registered under No. 3256/2019 East Cairo Criminal Court, known as “Sabt Al-Salam Violent Demonstrations,” to May 13, 2025, for closing arguments.

 

12- Case Name: Muslim Brotherhood Media Committees

  • Date: Monday, May 12, 2025
  • Location: Court Complex, Badr Prison Compound
  • Details: The Second Appellate Criminal Circuit decided to postpone the appeal of six defendants—associates of Dr. Hamzah Zoubi—accused of joining a terrorist group, broadcasting false news that disturbs public peace, and financing terrorist groups, known as the “Muslim Brotherhood Media Committees Case,” to June 10, 2025, to hear testimonies.

 

13- Case Name: Al-Tabe’a Terrorist Cell

  • Date: Monday, May 12, 2025
  • Location: Court Complex, Badr Prison Compound
  • Details: The Second Criminal Circuit (First Instance) decided to postpone the trial of 73 defendants in the case known as the “Al-Tabe’a Cell” to June 12, 2025, to allow their attendance from detention centers.

 

14- Case Name: Dispersal of the Nahda Protest Camp

  • Date: Monday, May 12, 2025
  • Location: Court Complex, Badr Prison Compound
  • Details: An Appellate Circuit rejected the appeal submitted by defendants Jamal Mahmoud Ahmed, Khaled Abdelallah Ahmed, Shaban Bakry Abu Saif Mohamed, and Hosni Saad Rashad in Case No. 12681/2013 Giza Police Department, known as the “Dispersal of the Nahda Protest Camp.” The court upheld the verdict against them. It is worth noting that these defendants had previously been sentenced in absentia to fifteen years’ imprisonment.

 

15- Case Name: Haras El-Thawra (Revolution Guard)

  • Date: Tuesday, May 13, 2025
  • Location: Court Complex, Badr Prison Compound
  • Details: An Appellate Court decided to postpone the appeal filed by nine defendants charged with heading and leading a terrorist group, known as “Haras El-Thawra,” to June 11, 2025.

 

16- Case Name: Special Action Groups

  • Date: Tuesday, May 13, 2025
  • Location: Court Complex, Badr Prison Compound
  • Details: The Second Criminal Circuit (First Instance) decided to postpone the trial of 73 defendants in the case known as “Special Action Groups,” charged with joining a terrorist group and carrying out hostile operations, to July 13, 2025, for defense pleadings.

 

17- Case Name: Suez Terrorist Cell

  • Date: Tuesday, May 13, 2025
  • Location: Court Complex, Badr Prison Compound
  • Details: The Second Appellate Circuit rejected the appeal submitted by defendant Akram Abdelbadi Ahmed, defendant number 21 in the referral order in the case known as the “Suez Terrorist Cell,” and upheld the in absentia verdict previously issued against him for targeting the Suez Canal.

 

18- Case Name: Alf Maskan Protests

  • Date: Tuesday, May 13, 2025
  • Location: Court Complex, Badr Prison Compound
  • Details: An Appellate Circuit, presided over by Judge Hamada El-Sawi, decided to postpone the appeal submitted by Ahmed Muhammad Abbas Al-Tawil, the main defendant in the “Alf Maskan Protests” case, to June 11, 2025, to allow his appearance from detention. It is worth noting that he had previously been sentenced in absentia to life imprisonment on November 18, 2018.

 

19- Case Name: Omraneya Cell (Re-trial)

  • Date: Tuesday, May 13, 2025
  • Location: Court Complex, Badr Prison Compound
  • Details: The Second Appellate Circuit decided to reserve the ruling on the appeal filed by defendants Ahmed Badawi Ibrahim Hakim and Mohamed Khalaf Juma Ahmed in the Daesh-related case known as “Omraneya Cell” for June 12, 2025.

 

20- Case Name: Trial of 71 Defendants

  • Date: Tuesday, May 13, 2025
  • Location: Court Complex, Badr Prison Compound
  • Details: The Second Criminal Circuit (First Instance), presided over by Judge Wagdi Abdel Moneim, decided to postpone the first session of the trial of 71 defendants in Case No. 12925/2024 Criminal Court of Fifth Settlement Police Station, registered under No. 305/2022 State Security Prosecution File, to July 13, 2025, for review and preparation.

 

21- Case Name: Sabt Al-Salam Violent Demonstrations (Second Session)

  • Date: Tuesday, May 13, 2025
  • Location: Court Complex, Badr Prison Compound
  • Details: The Second Criminal Circuit (First Instance) decided to postpone the retrial of defendants Mostafa Hamdy Ibraheim Muhammad and Mohamed Abdelhamid Muhammad Ismail in Case No. 20336/2019 Criminal Court of Al-Salam Thaan, registered under No. 3256/2019 East Cairo Criminal Court, known as “Sabt Al-Salam Violent Demonstrations,” to May 28, 2025, for closing arguments. The court also fined an enforcement officer and a criminal investigation director 1,000 Egyptian pounds each for failing to execute court orders.

 

22- Case Name: Haitham Al-Arabi Case – Smuggling Brothers Abroad Cell

  • Date: Wednesday, May 14, 2025
  • Location: Court Complex, Badr Prison Compound
  • Details: The Second Terrorism Division of the Supreme State Security Court decided to postpone the trial of 64 defendants in the case known as “Smuggling Brothers Abroad Cell” to July 14, 2025, to ensure the presence of all defendants.

 

23- Case Name: Financing & Foreign Currency Trafficking – Yehia Moussa and 16 Others

  • Date: Wednesday, May 14, 2025
  • Location: Court Complex, Badr Prison Compound
  • Details: The Second Criminal Circuit (First Instance), presided over by Judge Wagdi Abdel Moneim, decided to postpone the trial of Muslim Brotherhood senior figure Yehia Moussa and 16 others in the case concerning illegal funding and foreign currency trading to May 28, 2025, to complete defense pleadings.

 

24- Case Name: Trial of Lawyer Hoda Abdel Moneim and Nine Others

  • Date: Wednesday, May 14, 2025
  • Location: Court Complex, Badr Prison Compound
  • Details: The Second Terrorism Division decided to postpone the first session of the trial of lawyer Hoda Abdel Moneim and nine others in Case No. 19719/2024 Criminal Court of Nasr City, charged with joining a terrorist group, to July 14, 2025, for review and preparation.
