UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk strongly condemned the killing of dozens of civilians in Kordofan region of Sudan, calling for urgent investigation into this serious crime.
Türk expressed his condemnation of the gross human rights violations occurring in Sudan, emphasizing that the killing of unarmed civilians constitutes a flagrant violation of international human rights law and international humanitarian law.
The High Commissioner pointed to documented reports indicating the killing of at least 50 civilians by the Rapid Support Militia in Al-Mudayiq village on July 12, 2025, stressing that the use of heavy weapons against unarmed civilians constitutes a war crime under international law.
Türk called on all warring parties in Sudan to respect their international obligations to protect civilians, and urged the international community to take urgent measures to stop the escalation of violence in the country, emphasizing the necessity of holding perpetrators of these crimes accountable before the law and providing justice for victims and their families.
The Commissioner also noted that humanitarian conditions in Sudan are deteriorating with the continuation of the conflict, calling for ensuring the delivery of humanitarian aid to affected populations and conducting independent investigations into all reported violations.
