Sudan | Dengue Fever Outbreak in Khartoum, Gezira, and Darfur Highlights the Collapse of the Health System Amid the Ongoing War

Reading Time: 2 Minutes

The undersigned organizations express their deep concern over the widespread outbreak of dengue fever in the Sudanese states of Khartoum, Gezira, and Darfur, amid the near-total collapse of the health infrastructure caused by more than two years of armed conflict.

According to data from the Sudanese Ministry of Health, more than 14,000 cases of dengue fever have been recorded in Khartoum State since January 2025, including over 7,000 cases in the Karari locality of Omdurman. In Gezira State, authorities reported more than 3,000 infections and 176 deaths, in addition to 1,464 cholera cases that resulted in 52 deaths.

In Darfur, local activists estimate that at least 10,000 people have been infected—most likely with dengue fever—amid a complete absence of treatment protocols and an acute shortage of medical assistance.

Citizens and civil society organizations attribute the worsening of the crisis to the accumulation of stagnant rainwater and waste, the absence of preventive government planning, and the authorities’ premature push for the return of displaced people to devastated cities lacking basic services, creating an environment conducive to the spread of epidemics.

The undersigned organizations warn that the continued government inaction in addressing this public health emergency will aggravate the humanitarian catastrophe and increase the suffering of millions of Sudanese who face an immediate threat to their lives. They therefore call for:

1.An urgent national plan to combat epidemics and establish clear treatment and containment protocols.
2.Immediate provision and fair distribution of medicines and medical supplies to the affected states.
3.Repair of water and sanitation networks and swift removal of waste to curb mosquito breeding.
4.Activation of international intervention to provide emergency medical and humanitarian assistance, especially in hard-to-reach areas.
5.Transparency and public disclosure of health data to enable accountability and effective response.
The undersigned emphasize that the failure of the Sudanese authorities to fulfill their responsibilities will only deepen the health crisis and jeopardize the right to life and health for millions across Sudan.
