Committee For Justice has documented statements made by Health Minister in the “Tasis” government formed by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), Alaa Nugud, during an interview on Al Jazeera, in which he accused journalist and activist Muammar Ibrahim, currently detained by RSF in El-Fasher, of fueling conflicts in the region. These remarks have sparked serious concerns about the journalist’s safety amid ongoing violations against media professionals in conflict zones.
In a strongly worded response, the Sudanese Journalists Network expressed deep concern over Muammar Ibrahim’s fate, stating: “The stream of accusations made by Dr. Nugud against Muammar leaves us extremely worried about what awaits him,” while reaffirming the vital role of journalism in documenting violations. RSF had arrested the journalist following its takeover of El-Fasher in October and released a video on November 3, 2025, showing an ongoing interrogation, claiming he is being investigated for “defamation” after referring to RSF on social media as “militia” and “Janjaweed.”
Such practices constitute a blatant violation of Sudan’s obligations under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), which guarantees the right to freedom of expression, and contravene the principles of International Humanitarian Law, which protect civilians and media professionals during armed conflicts. These acts amount to serious human rights violations and may qualify as war crimes under the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court.
In its concluding statement, Committee For Justice strongly condemns these grave violations and demands the immediate and unconditional release of Muammar Ibrahim and all detained journalists, as well as the provision of safe corridors for media professionals in conflict zones. CFJ calls for urgent international intervention, including the activation of UN special procedures on freedom of expression and the mandate of an independent investigation by the Human Rights Council. The Committee emphasizes the need to enforce accountability mechanisms to ensure perpetrators face justice and do not benefit from impunity, in full compliance with Sudan’s international obligations.
